Blue Planet
Blue Planet Systems specializes in mineralizing CO2 and storing it permanently in building materials using their patented technology, which can capture and sequester CO2 from any source, turning it into valuable aggregates.
Mission of Blue Planet Systems
Blue Planet Systems aims to mineralize billions of tons of CO2 to store it permanently within the built environment. Their mission emphasizes the scalability and permanence of their solution to the global CO2 challenge.
Patented Mineralization Technology
Blue Planet's patented technology is currently the only scalable method for capturing and sequestering billions of tonnes of CO2 permanently. The process uses dilute CO2 from any source and converts it into valuable building materials, significantly addressing the issue of atmospheric CO2 accumulation.
Collaboration with Marathon Petroleum Corporation
In January 2024, Blue Planet Systems announced the completion of new funding along with a strategic collaboration with Marathon Petroleum Corporation. This partnership aims to advance the development and deployment of Blue Planet's carbon mineralization technology.
CO2-sequestered Aggregate Production
Blue Planet produces two core aggregate products: CaCO3 aggregate and upcycled RCA aggregate. Their CaCO3 aggregate is a synthetic limestone that consists of 44% CO2, while the upcycled RCA aggregate is produced from extracting alkalinity and calcium from waste concrete. These aggregates maintain equivalent strength, performance, and cost to standard quarried aggregates.
Carbon Storage and Environmental Impact
Blue Planet's technology mimics the earth's natural process of creating carbonate rocks or limestone, allowing them to store 20 billion tons of CO2 per year. Each tonne of Blue Planet's aggregate mineralizes 440 kg of CO2 permanently, preventing it from returning to the atmosphere. This approach positions their aggregate as a carbon-negative material, providing a significant environmental benefit over nature-based capture solutions.
Commercial Facility Development
Blue Planet Systems is collaborating with San Francisco Bay Aggregates to design and build the first commercial facility utilizing their patented carbon mineralization technology. This facility will demonstrate the practical application and scalability of their CO2 capture and storage method in a commercial context.
