Dismas House

Dismas House operates a residential reentry program in Tennessee, providing holistic support to men transitioning from correctional facilities back into the community.

Founders

Dismas House was founded in 1974 by Father Jack Hickey, a chaplain at Vanderbilt University. Father Hickey established the organization with a vision of assisting men returning from incarceration to reintegrate into society. The founding was rooted in the belief that providing comprehensive support could break the cycle of incarceration.

Services

Dismas House offers a range of services aimed at supporting men who are reentering society from correctional facilities. These services include meeting basic needs, providing health and well-being support, offering life skills training, and legal assistance. A key component of their approach is the Individual Placement and Support (IPS) service, which helps clients focus on their job or career preferences.

Reentry and Independent Living Programs

Dismas House operates two primary programs: the Reentry Program and the Independent Living Program. The Reentry Program is tailored for men transitioning from state correctional facilities and county jails, focusing on breaking the cycle of incarceration through holistic support. The Independent Living Program provides a more autonomous living arrangement while still offering support as needed.

History

Since its founding in 1974, Dismas House has grown to become an integral part of reentry services in Tennessee. In 2020, the organization moved to a new 72-bed campus. This campus includes 56 beds for the reentry program and 16 independent living units. The expansion allows Dismas House to enhance its services and better meet the needs of its clients.

Annual Events

Dismas House hosts several annual events to engage the community and honor contributions. Notable events include the Forgiveness Gala and Volunteer Appreciation events. These gatherings serve to raise awareness, foster community support, and celebrate the progress and achievements of the organization and its clients.
