As a senior engineering leader, I enjoy creating effective, world-class engineering teams empowered to solve big problems. I give my team autonomy in how they solve problems, allowing them to help guide us in the “how” while staying focused on the overall vision. After more than ten years in startups and 20 years in the tech industry, it has become critical for me to guide teams to deliver solutions quickly and with the flexibility to find the initial solution by following our users into a complete application. The key is that engineering teams have to provide impact or value. Aligning with the product management and executive team on the most important work is critical. My teams have done this repeatedly, creating 100’s of millions of dollars of new revenue, bringing many new users to the platform, and opening up billion-dollar new lines of business. I pride myself on being able to recruit top engineers to join me in my endeavors to build software that benefits everyone who uses it. I have grown small teams at WP Engine, Bazaarvoice, and Indeed.com to large, productive powerhouses that are creating new value far beyond the cost of the group. I also delight in the individual growth of my team members as they progress in their careers. As an Engineering leader, I establish the vision for new ways of working. At Indeed.com, we created an internal venture capital system that allowed us to rapidly explore new product innovation in a cost-sensitive and time-efficient manner. We launched over a dozen new products from our Incubator into the broader Indeed.com ecosystem, and many of those projects are the backbone of the successes Indeed sees today. While at Bazaarvoice, I led the team to build the first genuinely software-as-a-service application. In doing so, we took the revenue from that product and expanded it 20X to hundreds of millions of dollars. Ultimately, the goal of all of this is to make the world a better place. Whether that’s helping engineers, consumers, businesses, homeowners, job seekers, employers, or some other group, I’m excited when we’re participating in social good. I’ve led B2B, B2C, SaaS, Support, and practically every other type of engineering team out there, and when you get that mission right, it makes all the difference.
