About Julia Haines

I am a researcher who studies topics at the intersection of technology, innovation, and human practices. I am currently at Google, where I lead UX research in an AI-driven product incubator within Google Research, aiming to both build positive, transformative products and drive impactful, cross-disciplinary research and innovation. I previously led the UX research team for Google's Fuchsia operating system from 2015-2021. I am also a co-founder of the Responsible AI Licenses initiative (licenses.ai). I earned my PhD in Informatics from the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at University of California, Irvine. In my dissertation research, I investigated the decentralization and diffusion of high-tech startups globally, with a particular focus on the impact of the global spread of the seed accelerator model of innovation. At UCI, I worked in the Hana Research Group with Judy Olson and Gary Olson, and I was also an Intel Science & Technology Center for Social Computing research fellow. I previously earned an MS in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) at DePaul University and an MA in Social Sciences at The University of Chicago. I majored in both Anthropology and Journalism and Mass Communication (Visual Communication) at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. www.juliakhaines.com
