Lou Shapiro leads at the intersection of strategic growth and business transformation. As Chief Executive Officer of HSS for 17 years, Lou transformed the boutique New York provider into a global powerhouse that advances musculoskeletal medicine through world-class patient care, research and education. He led all strategic and operational aspects of the hospital, which now has 20+ locations in four states and treats nearly 200K patients annually from 80+ countries. Lou’s expertise spans strategic innovation and financial stewardship to value-based care, global alliances and technology integration. He unlocks organizational success by creating high stakeholder engagement from the frontline to the boardroom. Under Lou’s stewardship, HSS received widespread recognition, including being ranked #1 in the nation and world by U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek respectively. Lou drove HSS’ annual revenue to $2B; steered a $1B+ main campus modernization plan; reshaped the board of directors; and achieved an industry-leading Net Promoter Score of 94, among other accomplishments. Prior to joining HSS, Lou held executive roles at health systems in his home state of Pennsylvania. He also spent three years as a healthcare consultant at McKinsey & Co.—an experience that trained him to diagnose and solve complex business problems in the areas of strategy, operations and organizational structure. Throughout his career, Lou has served on numerous boards of healthcare enterprises. As a strategic advisor, he is passionate about mentoring senior executives to achieve peak performance and helping organizations reach their future state and deliver value to stakeholders.
