Before co-founding Shift5, Michael Weigand served in the U.S. Army for eight years as a Captain. He was an Airborne, Ranger-qualified Infantry officer and was selected as one of the first cyber operations officers in the Army. His military career included establishing and commanding multiple cyber organizations and teams, as well as contributing to the Army’s expeditionary cyber forces and platform mission assurance program.

In 2023, Michael Weigand was named a Cyber50 Executive by the Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC). His contributions to the Department of Defense include serving as an engineering and operations officer, conducting applied research and development, and working on high-profile projects with the Defense Digital Service. He played a key role in establishing the Army’s first cyber capability development unit.
