Ruwanthi Fernando has a solid educational foundation in science and business administration. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of the South Pacific, where she studied from 1991 to 1993. She furthered her education at the University of Western Sydney, obtaining a Master of Business Administration from 2004 to 2007. Additionally, she attended the University of the South Pacific again from 1994 to 1995.
