Before his tenure at Juniper Networks, Richard Bayliss was employed at Accenture as a Senior Network Architect working on the Telstra BMS project from 2004 to 2005. He also held roles at Orange Business Services from 2001 to 2004, where he was a Network Engineer and a Technical Trainer.

Richard Bayliss began his career at TPG Internet Pty Ltd, where he served as the Network Engineering Manager from 1999 to 2001. He studied Computer Science and Software Development, achieving a Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) from Deakin University in 1970.
