João Barreiro serves as the Chief Privacy & Data Ethics Officer at BeiGene, based in the London Area of the United Kingdom. Additionally, he is a Visiting Lecturer at the Maastricht University Faculty of Law, where he teaches remotely. João also contributes his expertise to the UK International Data Transfers Expert Council at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. Furthermore, he holds an advisory role at IAPP - International Association of Privacy Professionals, where he is a member of both the Research Advisory Board and the European Advisory Board.

João Barreiro has extensive experience in the field of privacy and data protection. He held several significant positions at BeiGene, including Chief Privacy Officer and Executive Director from 2023 to 2024, and Senior Director from 2021 to 2023. Prior to that, he was the Chief Privacy Officer at Willis Towers Watson from 2018 to 2021 and at HCL Technologies from 2017 to 2018. He also served as Chief Data Protection Officer at HCL Technologies from 2015 to 2016. His experience extends to roles such as Privacy Legal Advisor and Senior Data Protection Specialist at Celgene and serving as an Attorney at IBM and the Ministry of Health in Portugal.
Education and Expertise
João Barreiro has a distinguished educational background, having studied at prestigious institutions. He completed an Artificial Intelligence Program at the University of Oxford. He also pursued Postgraduate Studies in Industrial Property Law at the University of Lisbon and Postgraduate Studies in Pharmaceutical Law at Universidade de Coimbra. His formal law education includes an undergraduate and postgraduate law degree from Universidade Católica Portuguesa. João also serves as a Consultative Expert on Digital Ethics at the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority, reflecting his broad influence in the field of digital ethics and privacy.
