About Tim Mariano, MD, PhD, MSc, Smieee

Biomedical engineer and psychiatrist working in digital mental health. I have extensive experience designing and running clinical trials in academic, government, and industry settings. I have also led research in noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS) for neuropsychiatric disorders, including use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) as a potential treatment modality for chronic pain. I later extended my work into the development of novel telehealth and digital health approaches to reduce pain-related disability and mood symptoms. In early 2021, I was the first physician hired by Woebot Health. As the only psychiatrist at the company, I provide essential cross-functional medical expertise, drawing in part from ongoing active clinical practice. As Vice President, I provide medical, clinical, and scientific leadership for the company’s pipeline of digital mental health interventions (DMHIs), have initiated the buildout of core Medical Office functions, advance our scientific partnerships, and co-lead our Scientific Advisory Board. After receiving the Bachelor of Science in biomedical engineering from Harvard College and the Master of Science in cognitive neuroscience from the University of Oxford, I completed the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at Case Western Reserve University, receiving an M.D. and Ph.D. in biomedical engineering. I was an inaugural R25 research track psychiatry resident at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. I was then a clinician-scientist at Brigham and Women's Hospital before joining industry. From 2018-2021, I was Medical Director of late-stage clinical development at Sage Therapeutics, Inc., overseeing several large clinical trials in major depressive disorder. I currently hold research and clinical appointments with the RR&D Center for Neurorestoration and Neurotechnology (CfNN) of the VA Providence Healthcare System and am Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at Brown University.
