About Jim Brau (PhD, Cfa, Cfp®)
Jim Brau, Professor of Finance and Army National Guard Officer, is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance and holds the Joel C. Peterson Professorship at the Marriott School of Business. He received his undergraduate training at the United States Military Academy at West Point and served three years as an Airborne Ranger infantry officer in the United States Army and another five years in the Florida Army National Guard and Army Reserves. While in the reserves, Jim earned a PhD from Florida State University in business administration and finance. Jim joined the Marriott School in April 1999 and was honorably discharged as an Army Captain in June 1999. In 2004, Jim earned the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and in 2019 he became a Certified Financial Planner™ professional. In 2022, Jim recommissioned as a Captain in the Utah Army National Guard and currently serves in the 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Camp Williams. Jim's research interests include initial public offerings, entrepreneurial finance, learning, and real estate. He has a scholarship H-Index of 26, i10-Index of 37, over 5,900 cites, and over 159,000 ResearchGate reads. He has 131 academic presentations and published 72 peer-reviewed articles. He teaches corporate and entrepreneurial finance to university-wide undergraduate and graduate students. Jim has coauthored 17 textbooks. Jim married Michelle (West) in 1991. Michelle (AA Fashion Production & Management Columbus Technical College) is a stay-at-home mom currently working on her undergraduate degree at BYU in Family Studies. They are the parents of six children (two by marriage) and one granddaughter. Bekki (BS Business BYU, MS Instructional Psych BYU, PhD Supply Chain Management U Arkansas) is an assistant professor in the Marriott School of Business at BYU. She is married to Kamiko Ho’okano Adcock (BS Economics BYU) who is a high school film teacher and the founder of KIN Entertainment LLC and Sweet Film Talk podcast (https://www.sweetfilmtalk.com/). Jameson (BA Philosophy with minors in Human Development & Military Leadership BYU, MS Organizational Leadership CU-Boulder) is an Army veteran and Gonzaga Law Class of 2024. Brigham (BS Accounting & BS Economics BYU, MS Management UNC) is a UNC Accounting 4L PhD candidate. He is married to AJ (Call). AJ graduated from Bottega University and is a founder and CEO of Wander Maps Inc. They are parents of a daughter. Heber (BS Computer Science WGU) is cofounder and lead engineer of SmileTherapy Games and is working on his Master of Computer Science at UVU.
