Doug Jones has served as Principal Architect at CableLabs since 2017. In this role, he focuses on advancing network technologies, particularly through Proactive Network Maintenance. He leads the Full Duplex (FDX) DOCSIS project, which emphasizes distributed access technologies, including CMTS and OLT, as well as hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) and fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) technologies. His work includes involvement in optical projects, such as Passive Optical Networks (PON) and DOCSIS over RFoG. Jones also participates in interoperability exercises for DOCSIS 4.0 cable modems and Remote PHY equipment, contributing to multi-vendor interoperability testing for DOCSIS 4.0 technology.

Previous Experience

Before joining CableLabs, Doug Jones held several significant positions in the telecommunications industry. He worked at Comcast Cable as Vice President of Access Technologies in the Office of the CTO from 2009 to 2016. Prior to that, he was Chief Cable Architect at BigBand Networks from 2006 to 2009. His career began at Bellcore, where he was a Member of the Technical Staff from 1986 to 1992. Jones also worked at U S WEST Advanced Technologies as an Engineer for one year in 1992. Additionally, he had a previous tenure at CableLabs from 1996 to 2003, focusing on DOCSIS, CableHome, and PacketCable.

Education and Expertise

Doug Jones has an extensive educational background in engineering and technology. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, where he studied from 1982 to 1986. He also obtained a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from the same institution during the same period. Earlier, he studied at the University at Albany, achieving a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Biology, and Chemistry from 1978 to 1982. This diverse educational foundation supports his expertise in network technologies and engineering.

In his current role at CableLabs, Doug Jones has made significant contributions to network technology advancements. He led a DOCSIS 4.0 Interop event that achieved a downstream speed exceeding 9 Gbps.
