Background in Human Rights Advocacy

Hamid has a significant background in human rights advocacy. He served as the coordinator of KontraS, the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence, following the 1998 student protests. Additionally, he was a member of the Presidential Fact-Finding Team that investigated the 2004 murder of human rights defender Munir Said Thalib.

Professional Experience

Prior to his role at Change.org, Usman Hamid worked as an expert adviser to the International Center for Transitional Justice in Jakarta from 2010 to 2012. He co-founded the Public Virtue Institute in 2012, focusing on promoting ethical governance. He also held a fellowship at Nottingham University in 2009 and was appointed to the Presidential Working Unit for the Supervision and Management of Development to review Indonesia’s Human Rights Nation Plan of Action for 2011–2014.

Academic and Cultural Engagement

In addition to his professional and educational pursuits, Usman Hamid was a visiting scholar at the University of Columbia in 2003. He also has a passion for music, having played guitar in a band that won a prize at a national festival, showcasing his engagement in cultural activities.
