Current Position at Chevron
Daniel Cohen is currently serving as a HES (Marine) Intern at Chevron. In this role, he has developed standard operating procedures for the capture and care of oiled wildlife, compiled a database of Chevron’s turtle research, and created a Power BI search tool for this database. Daniel also engaged in practical fieldwork, including auditing oiled wildlife response equipment and participating in a turtle-tagging program during a trip to Barrow Island.
Previous Experience at CSIRO
Before joining Chevron, Daniel Cohen worked as a Student Research Assistant at CSIRO in 2019. During this one-month tenure, he participated in the International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 aboard the CSIRO research vessel ‘Investigator.’ He was involved in daily sampling tasks focusing on mesopelagic fishes and had a significant role in operating sampling equipment.
Education and Academic Research
Daniel Cohen holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine and Environmental Science from Murdoch University, which he completed in 2018. He furthered his studies at the same institution, obtaining an Honours degree (1st class) in Marine Science in 2019. His Honours research focused on the diet and prey selectivity of lanternfishes (Myctophidae) in the Perth Canyon. Before his university education, he earned a diploma in Marine Studies from Fremantle Challenger TAFE.
Research Expeditions and Fieldwork
Daniel Cohen has participated in several significant research expeditions. Notably, he joined two research voyages to Perth Canyon aboard the vessel ‘Whale Song,’ where he managed sampling equipment and conducted research pertinent to his Honours thesis. Additionally, he was part of the International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 on the CSIRO vessel ‘Investigator,’ where he was responsible for daily sampling tasks for mesopelagic fishes.
Projects and Initiatives at Chevron
During his internship at Chevron, Daniel Cohen has been involved in several projects. He developed an implementation guide for waste management during oil spills and audited oiled wildlife response equipment. His efforts also extended to the Harry Butler Institute, where he assisted in the quarantine control of the Indian House cricket. He was also a recipient of the Harry Butler scholarship, which allowed him to work in Chevron’s vacation program.
