At California Food Policy Advocates, Fernández contributed significantly to food policy initiatives. She worked as the Nutrition Policy Advocate from 2010 to 2013 and later served as the Director of Legislation from 2013 to 2015. She also began her career there as a Nutrition Policy Intern from 2009 to 2010.

Fernández earned her Master of Social Work (M.S.W.) degree with a focus on Management and Planning from the University of California, Berkeley, studying from 2008 to 2010. Prior to this, she completed her Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Ethnic Studies at UC San Diego from 2004 to 2008.
