He also held the position of Director of Ethics at Saint Thomas Health in two separate tenures, from 2009 to 2012 and again from 2013 to 2015. Additionally, he served as the Executive Director of Ethics at St. Vincent’s Health System for a brief period in 2014-2015.
Education and Expertise
Gremmels earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Health Care Ethics from Saint Louis University, where he studied from 2006 to 2015. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. His academic background includes specialized training in Catholic ethics and clinical ethics, supported by internships and fellowships in the field.

Gremmels completed an Ethics Internship at Ascension Health’s system office and a Clinical Ethics Fellowship at Saint Thomas Health. Gremmels has a diverse educational background that includes international studies. He studied French Language and Culture, Catholic Theology, and Anthropology at Université Catholique de l'Ouest for 11 months in 2002. He also studied Italian Language and Culture at Università degli Studi di Milano for 11 months in 2005.
