Maura Healey's Early Life and Family Background
Maura Healey was born in 1971 at the Bethesda Naval Hospital. She grew up as the eldest of five siblings in a farmhouse built in 1753 in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire. Her mother worked as a nurse and was very active in the local community. Healey's stepfather was a teacher, local union president, and coached her high school basketball team.
Maura Healey's Education and Athletic Career
Maura Healey attended Harvard College, where she captained the basketball team. Her athletic journey continued as she spent two years as a 5'4" starting point guard on a professional basketball team in Austria. Following her athletic career, Healey went on to attend Northeastern University School of Law.
Maura Healey's Legal Career
Maura Healey began her legal career in private practice before serving as Chief of the Civil Rights Division in the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office. She was later promoted to oversee the Public Protection & Advocacy Bureau and the Business & Labor Bureau. Healey led the first state challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act and held big banks and lending companies accountable after the 2008 financial crisis.
Maura Healey's Achievements as Attorney General
In 2014, Maura Healey became the first openly gay Attorney General in the United States, winning reelection in 2018. She sued Exxon Mobil for climate change misinformation and held Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family accountable for their role in the opioid epidemic. Furthermore, she implemented paid leave for families and established the Community Engagement Division within the Attorney General's office.
