Richard Woods has been serving as Georgia's State School Superintendent since being elected in November 2014. He was reelected in both 2018 and 2022, reflecting continued confidence in his leadership. Background in Public Education
Richard Woods brings over 30 years of experience in public education, covering grades Pre-K through 12. He dedicated 14 years to teaching at the high school level, during which he also held positions as department chair and mentor to fellow teachers. Beyond teaching, Woods spent eight years in various administrative capacities such as assistant principal, principal, curriculum director, testing coordinator, Pre-K director, and alternative school director.
Educational Initiatives and Reforms
During his tenure as State School Superintendent, Richard Woods has spearheaded several key initiatives. He led the state to its largest-ever reduction of high-stakes testing requirements and saw Georgia achieve an all-time high graduation rate, including a 97% rate for Career Pathway completers. He expanded STEM education and introduced STEAM school certification, creating new educational pathways in personal finance, fine arts, and Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education.
Student and Teacher Support
Richard Woods has emphasized the importance of student and teacher support through various initiatives. He hired the first-ever employees at the Georgia Department of Education dedicated to supporting fine arts and military students. Additionally, Woods established the Office of Whole Child Supports, the Office of School Safety and Climate, and the Office of Rural Education and Innovation. Each of these offices aims to provide comprehensive resources and a safer, more supportive learning environment.
Awards and Recognition
Richard Woods has been recognized for his contributions to education and service. He received the National Art Education Association's Distinguished Service Outside the Profession Award and the Patriotic Employer Award from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The National FFA Organization also honored him with the Honorary American FFA Degree, highlighting his impact on agricultural education and student development.
