About Toby Morning
I am a seasoned professional with a diverse background in the technology industry. In 1998, I founded the DJ Union and successfully sold it to the Musicians Union in 2000. At the young age of 21, I became the youngest African American director for a public company in 1999 while working with Destiny Media Technologies (DSNY). As part of the founding team at Destiny, I contributed to the development of the MPE DRM system and pioneered the creation of the first JavaScript video streaming media player, Clipstream.com. Additionally, I established the first commercial wireless internet service provider (ISP) in Los Angeles utilizing WIFI technology, which was later acquired by Canadian MVNO, Kiwi Mobile in 2003. In 2004, I co-founded Incubate.LA in Los Angeles with Freeman Murray. Following that, we relocated to India in late 2004, and in January 2005 I founded Blue Monitor Systems. From 2006 to 2008, I worked at Accton, where I played a key role in the launch of Meraki, Foneras, and Skype WIFI Phone. In the spring 2009 myself and Nima Adelkhani decided to rent a charted bus in Austin @ SXSW, invited VC's we knew from the bay area, and invited founders to come on board, and pitch VC's as we drove around downtown Austin, while driving around I met Wayne Sutton, and together we strategized on how to help more black tech founders get funded. In 2010 myself & Wayne Sutton launched the first black founder focused tech accelerator, and invited a young black female blogger (Angela Benton) to join us, that became known as the "NewMe" Accelerator. That year, I also acquired the world's first coworking space. Continuing my entrepreneurial journey, I partnered with Ralph Banna, Chairman of Priceline.com and Founder of Club Quarters Hotels, to establish Connections SF in the fall of 2012, which combined coworking and hospitality. My extensive hands-on experience spans various roles, including designer, front-end developer, network administrator, architect, product manager, and executive. I have also honed my skills in business development, sales, and marketing. In recent years, I have embraced the role of a startup evangelist, dedicating my time and expertise to promote startups as a driving force in the economy. I have been an investor in over 45 startups since 1999.
