Chris Butt serves as the Senior Director of Neuroscience at Inotiv, a position he has held since 2021. In this role, he focuses on providing full-spectrum science as a service, which includes facilitating the development of small molecules, biologics, and antisense oligonucleotides through various drug development processes. Under his leadership, Inotiv-Boulder generated over $800K in revenue in its first year, achieving a 25% year-over-year growth in the second year and a 100% year-over-year growth in the third year. His responsibilities also include overseeing more than 100 models related to immunity, inflammation, gut, bone, surgical, and neuroscience as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
Previous Experience at DSM
Chris Butt has extensive experience at DSM, where he held multiple roles from 2010 to 2020. He served as Principal Scientist, Biological Models from 2010 to 2017, and later as R&D Business Segment Lead from 2018 to 2019. He was also a Senior Science Fellow, Biological Models for a brief period in 2020. His tenure at DSM included a focus on translational biology and the development of biological models. His leadership contributed to significant advancements in the organization’s research capabilities.
Academic Background and Research
Chris Butt earned his Ph.D. in Neurobiology from the University of Kentucky, where he studied from 1995 to 2000. He also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neurochemistry, Pharmacogenetics, and Addiction-related behavior at the University of Colorado Boulder from 2000 to 2005. Earlier, he obtained a B.Sc. in Biology with a minor in Chemistry from Vanderbilt University from 1990 to 1994. His academic journey laid a strong foundation for his subsequent research roles, including his position as a Research Fellow/Associate at the Institute for Behavioral Genetics at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

In addition to his current role at Inotiv, Chris Butt has held several leadership positions in research. He was the Vice President of Research at Bolder BioPATH, Inc. from 2020 to 2021, and served as an Assistant Professor of Neuroscience and Radiation Safety Officer at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine from 2005 to 2007.
