Jiwoo Lee has been employed at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory since 2018 as a Research Scientist in the Atmospheric, Earth and Energy Division. In this role, Lee specializes in the interactive visualization of scientific big data. Prior to this position, Lee served as a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member in the Center for Applied Scientific Computing from 2016 to 2018. During this time, Lee contributed to the development of Earth System Model evaluation metrics, with a focus on climate variability modes.
Previous Experience in the Republic of Korea Air Force
Before joining Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Jiwoo Lee served in the Republic of Korea Air Force as a First Lieutenant. From 2008 to 2011, Lee worked as a Numerical Weather Prediction Operator and Weather Forecaster for three years in South Korea. This experience provided Lee with a strong foundation in meteorological operations and forecasting.
Visiting Scientist at NCAR
In 2014, Jiwoo Lee worked as a Visiting Scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. This position lasted for two months and allowed Lee to engage with advanced research in atmospheric sciences and computational methods.
Education and Expertise
Jiwoo Lee holds multiple degrees from Yonsei University. Lee earned a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Atmospheric Sciences from 2002 to 2006, followed by a Master of Science (M.S.) in Atmospheric Sciences and Meteorology from 2006 to 2008. Subsequently, Lee completed a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Atmospheric Sciences from 2011 to 2014. This educational background underpins Lee's expertise in atmospheric sciences and data visualization.
Postdoctoral Research Positions
After completing the Ph.D., Jiwoo Lee held postdoctoral positions at two institutions. From 2015 to 2016, Lee was a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Geography at the University of California, Los Angeles. This was followed by a two-year appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where Lee focused on scientific computing and climate modeling.
