Dr. Jacob Eleazer served in the Army National Guard for 12 years and was among the first actively serving transgender soldiers to come out publicly in 2014. He initially enlisted in 2006 into the 617th Military Police Company and in 2009 was commissioned as an officer in the Adjutant General Corps. Jacob served in a variety of duty positions during his military career, including battalion human resources officer and a three-year rotation as an Officer Candidates School platoon trainer/TAC (Teach, Assess, Council) Officer for the 238th Training Regiment. Jacob completed his doctorate in counseling psychology at the University of Louisville and a policy research fellowship with the Palm Center's Transgender Military Service Initiative. His dissertation investigating the experiences of transgender service members received awards from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and the American Psychological Association's Society for the Psychology of Sexual Orientation and Gender Diversity. He completed postdoctoral clinical fellowship in LGBTQ+ health and psychosocial rehabilitation and a two-year advanced fellowship in health services research and development at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System (VACHS) and Yale School of Medicine. During this time, he also served as LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinator for VACHS and a Subject Matter Expert in LGBTQ+ health for the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. He is currently a member of the American Psychological Association taskforce to revise and update the Guidelines for Psychological Practice with Transgender and Gender Diverse People. Jacob recently returned to his birthplace in north Florida where he works to empower community members and advance access to care in the South as clinical director for the Transgender and Intersex Specialty Care Clinic (TISCC) at Mayo Clinic Florida.
