About Gary Pinkus
I’m Chairman for McKinsey & Company in North America. Previously, I was the Managing Partner for McKinsey & Company in North America, Managing Partner of McKinsey's practice for the Western United States, and the global leader of McKinsey’s Private Equity and Principal Investing Practice, which I co-founded almost two decades ago. I advise and serve leading companies in private equity and a mix of other industries. I first joined McKinsey in Los Angeles in 1987 as a business analyst and then moved to the Firm's San Francisco Office in 1992. During the course of my career, I worked for Dole Fresh Fruit in Honduras; Bear Stearns' Mergers and Acquisitions Group in New York; and in McKinsey's Houston, Mexico City, Sydney, and Zurich offices. In addition to my client work, I’ve been a long-time member of McKinsey’s Shareholders Council, including chairing the Finance and Infrastructure Committee and the Risk, Audit, and Governance Committee. As a leader, I find incredible satisfaction in working with clients to change the trajectory of their organizations for the better. For me, it’s all about working with great people to make even greater things happen. Outside of McKinsey, I serve, or have served, on the boards of Wake Forest University, US Ski & Snowboard, California Academy of Sciences, Menlo School, California Business Roundtable, Silicon Valley Leadership Group, San Francisco Opera, and SF Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. My wife Mary and I have been married for over 30 years and we’re the parents to four (mostly) grown children and two dogs. In my spare time, I enjoy downhill skiing in the winter, waterskiing and wake surfing in the summer, and wine, golf, and reading novels all year round.
