Work at Midwest Biodiversity Institute

Maddy Moates joined the Midwest Biodiversity Institute (MBI) in the summer of 2022 as a Technician with the fish crew. In her current role as the NRSA Crew Leader, she coordinates the National Rivers and Streams Assessment (NRSA) Crew. Her responsibilities include sampling fish, water chemistry, macroinvertebrates, and physical habitat across various locations. Maddy conducts sampling activities in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island, contributing to the understanding of aquatic ecosystems in these regions.

Education and Expertise

Maddy Moates studied at Ashland University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science and Biology. This educational background provides her with a solid foundation in ecological principles and biological sciences, which she applies in her work at MBI. Her expertise includes fish sampling and habitat assessment, as well as knowledge of water chemistry and macroinvertebrate populations.

Background

Before taking on her current leadership role, Maddy Moates gained experience as a Technician at MBI, where she focused on fish sampling. Her work involved hands-on field research, allowing her to develop practical skills in aquatic sampling techniques. Maddy has also sampled fish species in Ohio and Illinois watersheds, including the Scioto and Olentangy rivers in Ohio, and the Des Plaines River in Illinois.

Achievements

Maddy Moates has successfully returned to MBI as the Crew Leader for the National Rivers and Streams Assessment survey. In this capacity, she leads a team in conducting comprehensive assessments of river and stream health. Her work contributes to the broader understanding of freshwater ecosystems and informs conservation efforts in the regions where she conducts sampling.
