Company Overview
Millibatt, Inc. is a manufacturing and robotics company based in Los Angeles, CA, USA. With a team of four, Millibatt focuses on developing innovative battery technologies that cater to the needs of EV and high-energy battery manufacturers. The company participated in the Y-Combinator cohort of Winter 2017. Its main area of operation includes the USA and broader American and Canadian regions.
Innovative Battery Separator Technology
Millibatt has developed a groundbreaking battery separator technology that enhances the safety and profitability of high-energy batteries. This technology, dubbed SafeCoat™ DDS (Direct Deposition Separator), eliminates film separator manufacturing defects—a common cause of battery thermal runaway. SafeCoat™ DDS increases active battery material volume, thus boosting energy density by up to 20%. The manufacturing process is significantly improved by replacing the rate-limiting film separator folding with a high-speed, scalable coating process. Additionally, the separator enables major manufacturing yield improvements through in-line inspection and remains highly cost-competitive with traditional film materials.
SafeCoat™ DDS Battery Separator
The SafeCoat™ DDS (Direct Deposition Separator) is one of Millibatt's flagship products. This innovative separator material addresses the defects in film separators that often lead to battery thermal runaway. It increases the volume of active battery material, enhancing energy density by up to 20%. Furthermore, SafeCoat™ DDS replaces the traditional film separator folding process with a high-speed, scalable coating method. This change not only boosts manufacturing efficiency but also allows for better yield through in-line inspection. SafeCoat™ DDS offers a cost-competitive alternative to traditional battery separators.
Nimbus™ ZEA Electrode Architecture
Millibatt introduced Nimbus™ ZEA (Z-Fold Electrode Architecture), significantly extending the lifespan of small batteries used in wireless applications. This technology replaces the volume-consuming coiled electrodes found in modern coin cells with a Z-Fold structure, resulting in improved battery life for rechargeable wireless applications such as TWS by up to 50%. Nimbus™ ZEA is particularly suitable for TWS, hearing devices, and small wireless IoT sensors where long battery life is crucial. Additionally, it supports high power demands required by Bluetooth-intensive apps, thus improving the time between charges. The technology is adaptable to various coin cell formats and can be as thin as 1 mm.
