About John Spencer Frsa

I’m a graphic designer and founder of design agency Offthetopofmyhead. I invent names, design logos, create graphic and language identities, and conjure up campaigns. My names include Alcohol Change UK, Held to Ransom for IPPF, Hullo, a national non-profit organisation, Rethink (formerly National Schizophrenia Fellowship), Showhow (formerly London Arts Training Consortium), Tribal Voice for Survival International, and UEFA People, a campaign by European football's governing body. My logos and identities include Alcohol Change UK, Aston University, Blind Veterans UK, Cambridge University Boat Club, King Edward VII's Hospital, Lloyd's Register, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Royal College of Nursing, Sadler's Wells, The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund, The National Archives, The Royal Academy of Engineering and University of Cambridge. My campaigns include Assume Nothing for Terrence Higgins Trust, Enough Said for World Society for the Protection of Animals, Police Care Champions for Police Care UK, Putting the Pieces Together for MS Society, Shape the Future for The Royal Academy of Engineering and Stop the Con for Survival International.Offthetopofmyhead, a collaboration between some of the most talented and experienced people around. I bring together the best team of specialists for each job. We’re creatively led but all our work is underpinned by a sound understanding of business strategy so we’re confident everything we create is on the mark. Offthetopofmyhead waves the flag for instinct, imagination and the sheer joy of doing things that haven’t been done before. My book, Time Flies When You’re Having Fun, is an A to Z of idiosyncratic letters. I made it out of logos I’ve designed over the years. My next book, There’s No Bullsh*t Like Design Bullsh*t, busts a few myths, challenges some stereotypes and reflects on what a graphic designer’s job is really about. Bullsh*t will be published later this year. My work has been widely published, most recently in Logo and Logotype, the best-selling books by Michael Evamy, and Symbol by Angus Hyland. I'm a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a member of the International Society of Typographic Designers.
