My name is Austin Martin and I am the Founder & CEO of Rhymes with Reason (RWR), an Educational Technology company that helps students learn literacy through their favorite music. One of RWR’s goals is to show this diverse generation of students that academic excellence is already within their means. Much of what they know, and what they can learn, lies within the music and culture in which they are already expert. My own educational trajectory is what inspired me to found the company. Like many young students, it took me a very long time to become academically interested. Music, however, was always a prominent influence in my life; throughout grade school I found myself enthralled by the language-rich genre of hip-hop. Over time, my deep investment in hip-hop music, and its illustrious vocabulary, provided me the opportunity to excel as a reader, writer and communicator. This ultimately sparked my passion for learning and led to my academic ascent to Brown University. At Brown, I became even more invested in not only my personal education, but also that of students (like me) from diverse backgrounds. After researching and finding that 67 of the top 100 words on the SAT are utilized in hip-hop music, I began my mission to maximize hip-hop and popular music’s potential as a vocabulary and literacy enrichment tool. Since founding RWR, our patent-pending technology has proven to be effective in increasing student engagement and performance. We have worked closely with ~150 schools and educational programs across the United States since our launch in 2017.
