About Kyoung Mi Choi

Dynamic international experiences from Bangladesh, Egypt, India, Nepal, South Africa, Guatemala, the USA, The Netherlands, and South Korea. My true passion lies in global education and the stories of transnational identities, including global nomads, third culture kids (TCKs), and cross-cultural individuals. I am also an advocate for mental health, the well-being of AANHPI, women, girls, youth, and LGBTQI+ rights. My educational background includes a master's degree in International Relations(IR) from Maxwell School and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Syracuse University, driven by my love for internationalization in education and diversity and inclusion in mental health support. Over the past decade, I have taught counseling and mental health related to master's level students at four different universities. I am involved in an exciting project, "AANHPI ‘Ohana Center of Excellence," funded by a $3.5M grant from SAMHSA (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). Our team, based in Hawaii and California, aims to create culturally sustainable resources for Asian American mental wellness. Additionally, we train facilitators to support local mental health providers, educators, and community organizations working closely with Asian and Asian American communities. It's inspiring to witness the expansion of this work nationwide. As a Public Voices fellow, I published various op-eds in Yes! Magazine, Visible Magazine, and Psychology Today. I am a regular contributor to Psychology Today through my own blog, "Courageously and Boldly." These opportunities allow me to share my insights and contribute to the promotion of mental wellness and cultural understanding in both local and global communities.
