Kelly Hu is the Co-President of Young Leaders in Healthcare and a student intern at Boolean Lab, iGEM, San Diego Lab Rats, and UC San Diego. She has a diverse background in bioinformatics, financial education, and STEM outreach.
Title and Current Roles
Kelly Hu holds the title of Co-President of Young Leaders in Healthcare. She is currently engaged as a Student Intern at Boolean Lab in San Diego, California. In addition, Kelly is the Vice President/Data Manager at iGEM and serves as an Intern and Teaching Assistant at San Diego Lab Rats. She is also a Student Intern at UC San Diego.
Previous Professional Experience
Kelly Hu previously worked as a Business Instructor at Elevate the Future from 2020 to 2021 in San Diego, California. She also co-founded Koin Finance in 2020, where she worked on promoting financial education among young teens.
Education and Expertise
Kelly Hu studied at the University of San Diego and at the Rosetta Institute (Biomedical Research Program), focusing on the Molecular Biology of Aging and achieving expertise in Bioinformatics in 2021. She also studied at Scripps Research with a focus on Bioinformatics and the Startup Incubator program in 2021. Additionally, she attended Torrey Pines High School from 2019 to 2023 and participated in the Leangap Startup Incubator.
Research and Mentorship
Kelly Hu conducts research at Dr. Wu's lab at UCSD, focusing on discovering a universal biomarker for eosinophils. She uses Boolean Equivalence Relationships and Differential Expression Analysis with DESeq2 for processing GEO datasets. Kelly also mentors young students at the Academy of Public Speaking and participates in weekly lab meetings discussing microbiome biomarkers, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.
Extracurricular Involvement
Kelly Hu co-founded the Young Women in Bio club at Torrey Pines High School aiming to empower young girls to pursue STEM. She competes on the Torrey Pines Varsity Dance Team and works with various non-profit organizations to promote STEM outreach in the community.
