About Ankit Nayan

Ankit Nayan, Co-Founder & CTO of SigNoz, has significantly contributed to the development and benchmarking of the logging solution, demonstrating its superior performance and efficiency compared to competitors like ELK and Loki.

Ankit Nayan Co-Founder & CTO

Ankit Nayan is the Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of a tech company. In his role, he oversees the technical direction and strategy, focusing on optimizing performance and resource efficiency for their software solutions. His work largely involves benchmarking and improving software performance.

SigNoz Performance Benchmark

Ankit Nayan carried out detailed benchmarking to compare SigNoz against other solutions such as ELK and Loki. The findings revealed that SigNoz is 2.5 times faster than ELK and requires 50% fewer resources for ingestion. Furthermore, for aggregate queries, SigNoz demonstrated a 13 times speed increase over ELK. The benchmarks utilized Elastic version 8.4.3, Logstash version 8.4.3, Loki version 2.6.1, and Promtail version 2.6.1.

Resource and Performance Optimization with SigNoz

According to Ankit Nayan’s analysis, SigNoz uses significantly fewer resources compared to competing solutions. The storage requirements for SigNoz are roughly half that of ELK for the same volume of logs, indicating efficient data handling. The findings also noted that Elasticsearch exhibited higher disk I/O compared to SigNoz due to translogs being written to disk.

Technical Insights on SigNoz and ELK

Ankit Nayan highlighted several technical details during his research. For log generation, he used flog, a tool for generating fake log data in various formats. The deployments were carried out using four VMs—three for generating logs and one for the logging solution. An otel collector was configured to extract and index all fields. Disk ingesting was done using gp2 disks with a maximum throughput of approximately 250 MB/s. SigNoz employs ClickHouse for storage, benefiting from various codecs and compression mechanisms.
