About Joseph Yang

Joseph Yang is a partner at PatentEsque Law Group, LLP, and a Lecturer at Stanford Law School. Previously, he was VP & General Counsel of Cryptography Research, Inc. Joe specializes in IP-centric deals (patent/tech transactions, JVs, IoT, cloud & standards bodies). He is also an expert witness for high stakes IP/licensing disputes. Joe has led hundreds of deals worth billions of dollars for computer, electronics, consumer, entertainment, energy & healthcare clients. Because of this breadth, he is often hired for “convergence" deals between disparate industries. He has also been an arbitrator, overseen patent litigation & developed corporate IP portfolios. Joe is profiled in Marquis’ Who’s Who in American Law & Who’s Who in America; and by Intellectual Asset Management’s World’s Leading IP Strategists & World’s Leading Patent Professionals. IAM named Joe as 1 of only 10 “highly recommended" IP transactions lawyers in California -- the only one from a boutique firm. Joe is also named to the SuperLawyers list for Northern California. Joe co-chairs the nationwide Advanced Licensing, Advanced Patent Licensing & Understanding the IP License courses -- attended by thousands of lawyers annually -- at the Practising Law Institute. He has written for journals & books, and been cited by courts & treatises. He teaches Technology & Patent Licensing at Stanford Law School & taught Patent Law at U.C. Berkeley School of Law. He is a board member of the Licensing Executives Society - Silicon Valley chapter, and of the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Silicon Valley. Previously, Joe co-founded & later led the IP Strategy & Transactions practice of Skadden, Arps (Palo Alto), the world’s then-largest law firm. Originally, Joe was an aerospace & energy engineer. Joe has a J.D. from Stanford and a Ph.D. (engineering) from the California Institute of Technology, where he has served on the boards of the Caltech Alumni Association, and the Caltech Associates.
