I write natural stories. That is to say, I am a journalist, essayist, and historian working at the intersection of the environment, history, culture, and community. My books include "Natural Rivals: John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, and the Creation of America’s Public Lands," plus "Wonderlandscape," "The Cowboy Girl," and "Stories from Montana's Enduring Frontier." I write for several magazines, and publish the weekly newsletter https://naturalstories.substack.com. For many years I also wrote and edited books, reports, articles, white papers, and other documents as a self-employed business writer. My success in business, like my success at narrative nonfiction, comes down to writing and storytelling skills -- finding and telling natural stories.
