About Kate O'brian
Kate O’Brian is a journalist and senior executive leader with extensive domestic and international experience leading complex organizations. In April of 2021 Kate was named the head of network news for the Scripps Networks, leading both Newsy and Court TV. As the founder and CEO of O’ Media Strategies, Kate O’Brian consulted with media companies and individuals on long- and short-term strategy, content development, leadership coaching, and performance assessment. Kate’s client roster included the Washington Post, Voice of America, The United Nations, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, start-up news organizations, and private clients. Kate started her career at ABC News in New York. After working as a producer on many of the network’s high-visibility programs, and at bureaus in Washington, DC, Rome, London, and Atlanta, Kate was promoted to executive management. Her final position at ABC News was SVP for News, where she oversaw all news coverage for the network, the specialized reporting units, ABC News Radio and the Affiliate News Service NewsOne. In 2013 Kate launched Al Jazeera America as its President. AJAM won virtually every major journalism award during its nearly 1,000-day existence. Kate’s own personal and team awards include a Peabody, Emmy, two Alfred I. duPont awards, and the 2015 Robert G. McGruder Award for commitment to gender and ethnic diversity. In 2016 Kate was invited to University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, as the Hearst Visiting Professor at the School of Media and Journalism. She also serves on the advisory board of Press Forward, an independent initiative to change culture in newsrooms, Aspen Institute's Artisan Alliance, and the Partnership for After School Education.
