About Caren Ulrich Stacy

For more than 20 years, Caren served as the head of talent for several of the world's top law firms, including Arnold & Porter, Cooley, and Weil Gotshal. After co-founding Lawyer Metrics to uncover the traits of high-performers through "Moneyball" data analyses, Caren created Diversity Lab to focus exclusively on boosting diversity and inclusion in the legal profession. The Lab experiments with unique and innovative ways to recruit, advance, and retain diverse talent through the use of data, behavioral science, technology, and design-thinking. The Lab's hallmark beta project – the OnRamp Fellowship – is the first “Returnship” ever launched in law firms. Women returning to the profession after an extended career hiatus are matched with more than 50 prestigious legal organizations using data and science. To inspire others to experiment and innovate, the Lab partnered with Stanford Law School and Bloomberg Law to organize the “Women in Law Hackathon” in 2016 in which 54 law firms worked together to generate ideas that will increase the retention and advancement of women in law. One of the ideas currently being piloted with 300+ law firms is the Mansfield Rule, which focuses on increasing diversity in leadership. In 2018, Diversity Lab launched two additional hackathons with more than 100 law firm and legal department leaders in partnership with Bloomberg Law, Harvard Executive Education, UC Hastings, and Northwestern Law School. Ten "winning" ideas ranging from pay equity and sponsorship to a real-time diversity and inclusion data dashboard are in the process of being developed and piloted. The Lab’s work has been featured in Fast Company, The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, The Wall Street Journal, Fortune, Bloomberg, The American Lawyer, and on Fox News.
