Allan Cox serves as a trumpet professor and Chair of the Brass and Percussion Department at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. In this capacity, he instructs trumpet students and manages department affairs. He performs with the Blair Brass Quintet, conducts the trumpet ensemble, and handles brass auditions. Additionally, he advises students and coaches various ensembles, including brass chamber music, orchestra, and wind ensemble brass and/or trumpet sectionals.
Previous Teaching Roles
Allan Cox has accumulated extensive teaching experience over his career. He was a trumpet instructor at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Sewanee, Tennessee, from 1985 to 2001. Additionally, he served as a guest trumpet professor at Musashino Academia Musica in Tokyo, Japan, from 1980 to 1982. Prior to these roles, he held a long tenure at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he taught trumpet from 1972 to 2000. His early career included a position as a trumpet instructor at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, from 1970 to 1972.
Educational Background
Allan Cox pursued his academic and musical education at several institutions. He achieved a Bachelor's of Music Education in trumpet from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Subsequently, he studied Trumpet Performance at Wichita State University, where he earned his Master of Music in Performance. His formal education provided a foundational basis for his extensive career in music education.
Performance and Coaching at Vanderbilt University
In addition to his administrative and teaching responsibilities at Vanderbilt University, Allan Cox is an active performer and coach. He performs solo and chamber music recitals at the Blair School of Music. His role extends to coaching the brass chamber music, orchestra, and wind ensemble brass and/or trumpet sectionals. He is deeply involved in recruiting prospective students and managing brass auditions, highlighting his commitment to fostering new musical talent.
