About Henry Beukema
Education and Early Military Training
Henry Beukema graduated from Yale University in 1968. Following his graduation, he received a reserve commission from the Navy's Officer Candidate School in Newport. This early education and military training set the foundation for his future contributions in both military and civilian capacities.
Naval Service and Teaching
During his time in the Navy, Henry Beukema served as Gunnery and Missile Officer on the USS Leahy. After his active service, he transitioned to an academic role, teaching military history and naval science at Vanderbilt University's Naval ROTC unit. His naval service concluded in 1975.
Career in Grantmaking
Henry Beukema retired as a western Pennsylvania grant maker in September 2016, marking the end of a 37-year career. He spent over 24 years as Executive Director of the McCune Foundation and held the position of Executive Director at the Pitcairn-Crabbe Foundation since January 2000. Additionally, he worked for more than 12 years with the Heinz Endowments and The Pittsburgh Foundation as a Program Officer.
Volunteer Work
Henry Beukema actively volunteers at several organizations, including Shadyside Presbyterian Church, Winchester Thurston School, and the Eye and Ear Foundation. His engagement in these organizations demonstrates his ongoing commitment to community service.
