Kiganzi Nyakato has served as the Head of Emergencies Unit at the World Food Programme since 2017. Based in Juba, South Sudan, Nyakato has been responsible for overseeing emergency response initiatives in the region. Prior to this role, Nyakato worked as a Programme Officer at the World Food Programme from 2001 to 2013, where he gained experience in various countries including Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, and Liberia.
Education and Expertise
Kiganzi Nyakato holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Geology from Makerere University, which he attended from 1990 to 1993. He further pursued a Bachelor of Science in Topographic Science GIS at the University of Glasgow from 1993 to 1995. Nyakato also earned a Master's degree in Humanitarian Assistance (MAHA) from Tufts University, studying International Humanitarian Law, Human Rights, and Customary Law from 2001 to 2002.
Background
Before joining the World Food Programme, Kiganzi Nyakato worked as an Emergency Preparedness and Response Officer with the UN OCHA Regional Office in Nairobi. His work covered the eastern and Horn of Africa, where he focused on emergency preparedness strategies. Additionally, he led the Blantyre Sub Office in southern Malawi, concentrating on building resilience in vulnerable communities.
Achievements
Kiganzi Nyakato has implemented various initiatives aimed at improving food security and community resilience. Notably, he collaborated with the International 4H Liberia Chapter to establish school gardens across Liberia. He also served as a focal point for the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought (IGAD) for four years, where he addressed climate change and its implications for food security and disaster risk preparedness.
