About Ethan Chiu

I am an undergraduate at Yale University majoring in Global Affairs and History, and am deeply interested in international relations and technological innovation. I have a lifelong interest in how technology connects the world, along with extensive project management and leadership skills. Born to Taiwanese parents who emigrated to the US as Taiwan transitioned to democracy, I am fascinated with the impact of policy and civic engagement. From winning Best Delegate in multiple debates regarding nuclear weapons and single-payer healthcare within Model Congress to discussing educational policy within the Department of Education as a US Presidential Scholar and National Honor Society Scholarship Finalist, I have sought to involve myself in policy discussions. Within my involvement in the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Yale Law School, Yale Policy Institute, and Next Generation Diplomacy, among other activities, I have also sought to investigate the nuances of the US-China relationship, specifically the impact of AI and emerging technology in a world increasingly driven by semiconductors. I have also been extensively involved in research endeavors within the biomedical and environmental space; I was selected as a Regeneron Science Talent Search Finalist for my in silico and in vitro research on methods to repurpose antibiotics to treat cancer and create more effective oceanic filtration devices. With my combination of interests in technology and policy, I believe that I can effectively investigate the interplay between emerging technologies and foreign relations in this moment of heightened US-China tensions. I also have extensive project management and leadership experience. I have launched substantial initiatives on the American Red Cross National Youth Council, as the Policy Committee Chair of the US Youth Advisory Council for the UN Ocean Decade, and as Next Generation Diplomacy’s Founder and CEO. At Yale, I founded and forge partnerships for the Yale Foreign Policy Initiative, actively manage corporate and nonprofit sponsorships for Yale Model UN Taiwan and the Yale College Council, chair committees for Yale Model UN and Yale Model Congress, edit for the Yale Review of International Studies, and develop executive training programs, including translation, for the Yale School of Management. I have also taken classes such as International Law and Cooperation and Stanford’s China Scholars Program, which have strengthened my determination to work in the international relations field.
