Blue Distinction Centers

BCBSA's Blue Distinction® program identifies and recognizes doctors and hospitals for high-quality care. The program includes several specialized areas such as general health, wellness, and more complex procedures. The Blue Distinction Centers for Maternity Care program specifically addresses maternal health equity by setting enhanced criteria. This includes collecting demographic data, conducting drills for adverse maternal events, and supporting doula participation. More than 600 hospitals nationwide have been recognized for their superior maternity care. These distinctions aim to guide patients to providers delivering exceptional healthcare services.

Behavioral Health Initiatives

Between 2019 and 2023, BCBSA expanded its network of behavioral health providers by 55%, now including over 450,000 providers across the United States. The organization has over 250 youth mental health programs and collectively invested $44 million in community mental health programs in 2022. One notable initiative includes an investment of $10 million in Boys & Girls Clubs of America to train 48,000 staff members in trauma-informed practices, aiming to provide better mental health support for young people nationwide.

BCBSA leverages its extensive data capabilities through Blue Cross Blue Shield Axis®. This platform is the largest healthcare data resource in the industry, powering advanced analytics and insights. These capabilities are utilized to enhance healthcare quality and affordability across various service areas. In 2022, these companies collectively invested $44 million specifically in community mental health programs.
