History

Cascade Public Media's roots trace back to 1954 when KCTS Television went on-air from the University of Washington campus. In 1970, KCTS 9 became part of the PBS network. The station expanded further in 1994 by merging with KYVE 47 in Yakima. A significant shift occurred in 2015 when KCTS 9 embarked on a digital-first strategy and merged with Crosscut Public Media, forming Cascade Public Media. 2018 marked another milestone with the opening of the Hive Media Lab and the acquisition of Piranha Partners.

CPM Brands

Cascade Public Media operates several key brands. KCTS 9 is known for its PBS programming and local storytelling. Crosscut focuses on delivering in-depth local journalism in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Piranha Partners offers innovative storytelling through advanced graphics, animation, and audio. Hive Media Lab, positioned next to the Space Needle, serves as a hub for media innovation, hosting events and providing top-tier production facilities.

Capital Campaign

Cascade Public Media's Capital Campaign successfully raised $13.4 million, surpassing its goal of $12.5 million. The campaign secured a new permanent home for KCTS 9 and Crosscut in a pre-existing 44,317 square foot building in Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood. This new facility includes a 2,000 sq. ft. flexible layout for events, a large 250-person multi-purpose event space, and a 2nd floor outdoor terrace. The building also features coffee lounges with kitchenettes on multiple floors, designed to provide flexible workspaces for staff.
