Services

Casco Bay Island Transit District (CBITD) provides year-round passenger, freight, postal, and vehicle ferry services to the islands of Casco Bay from Portland, Maine. The service includes regular ferry travels, specialty cruises for island experiences, and private charters for events such as weddings and group tours. Annually, CBITD transports over one million passengers, 35,000 vehicles, and more than 500,000 pieces of freight. They also deliver U.S. mail and provide transportation for island students traveling to and from Portland.

History

The Casco Bay Island Transit District was established on April 17, 1981, through emergency State legislative action, taking over the assets of the bankrupt Casco Bay Lines and starting operations on March 27, 1982. CBITD operates a ferry system that has been in service for over 150 years, adapting and expanding its services over time. The ferry terminal at the Maine State Pier was constructed in 1988 and has undergone phased renovations as part of the Terminal Renovation Project.

Islands Served

CBITD serves six islands year-round, including Peaks Island, Little Diamond Island, Great Diamond Island, Long Island, Chebeague Island, and Cliff Island. Each island benefits from regular ferry services, allowing for the transport of passengers, vehicles, and freight, as well as specialty cruises that enable riders to explore the unique characteristics of these locations.

Fleet Details

The CBITD fleet comprises several vessels, each with specific capacities and features. The Wabanaki, built in 2013, can carry 398 passengers. The Aucocisco III, from 2005, also holds 399 passengers. The Machigonne II, built in 1987, carries 399 passengers and 12 vehicles. The Maquoit II, from 1994, can carry 399 passengers and one vehicle. The Bay Mist, built in 1985, accommodates 297 passengers. These vessels support the diverse transportation needs of the islands year-round.

Governance

The governance of the Casco Bay Island Transit District is overseen by a Board composed of 12 Directors. Ten of these directors are elected from the islands, one is appointed by the City of Portland, and one by the Commissioner of the Maine Department of Transportation. This governance structure ensures that the interests of both island residents and external stakeholders are represented in operational decisions.
