History of Charnel Music

Charnel Music is an independent record label that launched in 1988. Initially, it released cassettes as part of the global experimental tape-trading network before expanding its offerings to CDs. After a long hiatus, the label made a comeback in 2021 with new releases and a presence on Bandcamp. Charnel Music has continuously evolved its format choices, including Vinyl LPs, Compact Discs, and 7" Singles.

Charnel Music Artists and Releases

Charnel Music has released albums by artists such as Crash Worship, Pain Teens, and Fushitsusha. The label has also introduced a division called Circular Reasoning to focus on more accessible music. This division includes releases from Japan's Angel'in Heavy Syrup and San Francisco's Tel Basta. Recent releases from Charnel Music in vinyl-and-digital formats are available on their Bandcamp page.

Automatism Press Publications

Automatism Press is an independent publisher that began in 1995. It has published books like 'Ashes & Rust,' 'Death's Garden,' 'The Paramental Appreciation Society,' and 'Lend the Eye a Terrible Aspect.' The press also hosts its own website at www.automatismpress.com. Notably, Automatism Press compiled an anthology, 'Morbid Curiosity Cures the Blues,' which features stories from the ten issues of 'Morbid Curiosity' magazine.

Morbid Curiosity Magazine

'Morbid Curiosity' was an annual journal that gained a devoted following for publishing true, first-person accounts of unusual experiences. Running for ten years, it celebrated the absurd, grotesque, and unusual. The anthology 'Morbid Curiosity Cures the Blues,' compiled by Loren Rhoads, features favorite stories from the magazine's entirety.

Ongaku Otaku and Japanese Music Scene

'Ongaku Otaku' was a magazine published in the 1990s to introduce readers to the Japanese independent and underground music scene. The magazine released four issues, with the first issue debuting in May 1995.
