Feeding San Diego, established in 2007, is the leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization in San Diego County, providing over 35.4 million meals from July 2022 to June 2023 through extensive partnerships and food rescue efforts.
History
Feeding San Diego was established in 2007. Since its founding, the organization has grown to become the leading hunger-relief and food rescue organization in San Diego County. It is the only partner food bank for Feeding America in the San Diego region. Feeding San Diego focuses on connecting individuals facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue efforts.
Mission
Feeding San Diego's mission is to connect every person facing hunger with nutritious meals by maximizing food rescue. This mission is realized through extensive partnerships with grocery stores, local farmers, and individual food donors. The organization prioritizes food rescue to reduce waste and provide meals to those in need.
Food Rescue and Environmental Impact
Feeding San Diego rescued 76% of its distributed food from going to waste. From July 1, 2022, to June 30, 2023, the organization provided more than 35.4 million meals, redirecting over 31 million pounds of food from the landfill. These efforts saved roughly 27,592 metric tons of CO2 equivalent from being emitted into the atmosphere, underscoring the environmental benefits of their food rescue program.
Community Partnerships
Feeding San Diego works with nearly 350 local community organizations to distribute food. The organization also collaborates with over 770 food donors in San Diego County and 120 farms and packing sheds throughout California. With a strong network of 22,200+ volunteers and 15,600 donors, the organization ensures efficient food distribution to children, families, seniors, college students, military families, veterans, and the unhoused.
Youth Meal Programs
Feeding San Diego offers four different Youth Meal Programs, including federally funded programs that provide scratch-made meals to youth during the summer and after school. These programs aim to ensure that children receive nutritious meals beyond the school year, contributing to their overall health and well-being.
