Continuing Her Father's Legacy in Food Rescue
Patty O’Connor feels incredibly fortunate to continue her father Joe O’Connor’s legacy in food rescue. Joe O’Connor began rescuing food more than 20 years ago from his local grocery store. Every Tuesday and Saturday morning at 6:30 AM, Joe would collect the food and take it to Catholic Charities in downtown San Diego. Joe’s commitment to food rescue persisted until the day before he passed away at 81 years old.
Rescuing Over One Million Pounds of Food Monthly
Under Patty O’Connor’s leadership as COO, the food rescue organization successfully recuperates over one million pounds of food each month. This impressive feat is accomplished with the collaboration of more than 300 local grocery stores. The rescued food is then distributed to various charitable organizations, thereby helping to alleviate food insecurity in the community.
Joe O’Connor's Food Rescue Mission
Joe O’Connor, Patty’s father, was a pioneer in the local food rescue mission. He began his efforts over 20 years ago, driving food from his local grocery store to Catholic Charities in downtown San Diego. Joe was adamant about rescuing food twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Saturdays at 6:30 AM. His dedication did not wane, and he continued his mission until the day before he passed away at the age of 81.
A Family Tradition of Compassionate Service
The O’Connor family tradition in food rescue has spanned generations. Often, Joe O’Connor would bring along grandchildren to help in his food rescue endeavors. This practice has imbued the family with a strong sense of community service and compassion, values that Patty O’Connor continues to uphold as COO of the family’s food rescue organization.
