Fulcrum Bioenergy
Fulcrum BioEnergy is a leader in creating renewable transportation fuels from landfill waste, with its Sierra BioFuels Plant in Nevada being the world’s first commercial-scale facility of its kind.
Services Offered by Fulcrum BioEnergy
Fulcrum BioEnergy specializes in the production of renewable and low-carbon transportation fuels from landfill waste. Their process aims to convert otherwise discarded materials into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and low-carbon syncrude. The company utilizes advanced technologies such as gasification and Fischer-Tropsch to transform waste into valuable fuel sources. Fulcrum BioEnergy also engages in long-term waste supply agreements with partners like WM and Waste Connections, and fuel offtake agreements with major airlines and energy companies.
Sierra BioFuels Plant in Reno, Nevada
The Sierra BioFuels Plant in Reno, Nevada, is Fulcrum BioEnergy's flagship facility and the world’s first commercial-scale plant to produce low-carbon transportation fuels from landfill waste. Successfully producing synthetic crude oil since December 2022, this plant converts 175,000 tons of landfill waste into approximately 11 million gallons of renewable syncrude each year. The plant is located near WM's Lockwood Regional Landfill and created over 500 construction jobs and more than 100 permanent jobs.
Future Plant Locations and Production Goals
Fulcrum BioEnergy has extensive plans to establish over ten additional plants across the U.S., aiming to produce around 400 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel annually. Key future facilities include the NorthPoint facility in Cheshire, U.K., which will begin production in early 2027 with an output of 100 million liters of low-carbon aviation fuel, and the Centerpoint facility in Gary, Indiana, set to produce 31 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel per year starting in 2027. Additionally, the Trinity Fuels Plant on the U.S. Gulf Coast is expected to produce 31 million gallons of net-zero carbon jet fuel annually from 2028.
International Expansion and Opportunities
Fulcrum BioEnergy is actively pursuing international opportunities, planning to expand into countries such as the U.K., Mexico, Australia, South Korea, and Japan. These efforts include significant collaborations and potential facility sites aimed at producing sustainable fuels on a global scale.
Patents and Technological Innovations
Fulcrum BioEnergy's transformation process for converting landfill waste into net-zero carbon transportation fuels is built upon a robust foundation of patents and intellectual property. The company leverages advanced gasification and Fischer-Tropsch technologies, which are central to their innovative approach to sustainable fuel production. This technological prowess ensures that Fulcrum BioEnergy remains at the forefront of renewable energy advancements.
