Gallo Winery, founded in 1933 by Ernest and Julio Gallo in Modesto, California, is the largest winery in the United States by sales volume and operates more than a dozen wineries across California and Washington.
Company History
Gallo Winery was founded in 1933 by brothers Ernest and Julio Gallo in Modesto, California. Initially producing 177,847 gallons of wine in its first year, the company expanded rapidly, selling 440,000 gallons by its second year. Significant milestones include the establishment of Gallo Glass Company in 1958, the introduction of sparkling wines Eden Roc and André in 1966, and the opening of its first international office in London in 1983. In 1993, Gallo introduced its first super-premium offering, Gallo Estate Wines. Gallo Winery continues to grow and innovate, leading the U.S. wine industry by sales volume.
Major Acquisitions
Gallo Winery has been active in expanding its portfolio through strategic acquisitions. In 2002, it purchased Louis M. Martini Winery, and in 2005, Barefoot Cellars. Recent acquisitions include the iconic Stagecoach Vineyard in Napa Valley and luxury tequila brand Don Fulano in 2020. In 2021, Gallo completed the acquisition of more than 30 brands from Constellation Brands, Inc. and purchased Agave Loco LLC, owner of leading cream liqueur brand RumChata. Further expansion includes acquiring Rombauer Vineyards, Hahn Family Wines, and BEV in 2023.
Environmental Initiatives
Gallo Winery is committed to sustainability and environmental stewardship. It was the first winery in the United States to receive ISO 14001 certification. The company's Dry Creek building achieved LEED® Gold status, and their environmental management system (EMS) guides processes at all their facilities. Gallo's energy efficiency initiatives have saved over 11 million kilowatt-hours of electricity since 2015. Additionally, the company is dedicated to water stewardship, an essential part of its long-term growth strategy, and supports the American Farmland Trust.
Community Engagement
Gallo Winery actively supports the communities where its employees live and work. The company has contributed significant funds to various causes, including $1 million to fire recovery efforts and $100,000 each to hurricane and earthquake relief efforts in 2017. Gallo also supports a variety of non-profit organizations, charitable foundations, scholarships, and community events. Their focus extends to supporting educational and healthcare initiatives, particularly in Stanislaus, Fresno, and Merced counties, as well as California's North and Central Coasts.
