History

Hikal was established in 1988. It has since grown to encompass multiple facets of the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. Milestones include the establishment of its Mahad plant in 1991, the commissioning of its Taloja plant in 1997, and the acquisition of the Panoli plant from Novartis in 2000. Today, Hikal operates five manufacturing facilities across India and maintains a Research & Technology center in Pune.

Manufacturing Facilities

Hikal operates five manufacturing facilities located in Maharashtra (Taloja and Mahad), Gujarat (Panoli), and Karnataka (Jigani). The Jigani site houses two manufacturing plants and is notable for holding US FDA approval for producing cGMP intermediates and APIs. Each facility offers different manufacturing capabilities, including specialty chemicals, fungicides, herbicides, and intermediates. The facilities are regularly inspected and accredited with several ISO certifications.

Research & Technology

Hikal's Research & Technology center in Pune specializes in synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, process intensification, biocatalysis, and more. The center is equipped with advanced analytical instruments such as HPLC, GC, GCMS, UPLC, LCMS, NMR, XRPD, and Malvern particle size analyzer. It employs statistical tools like DOE to optimize process development and has expertise in handling enzymes from lab scale to commercial manufacturing.

Certifications

Hikal is recognized for its commitment to quality and safety, holding various certifications. It is the first Indian life sciences company to receive the Responsible Care® certification. The Mahad plant is accredited with ISO 9000:2008, ISO 14001, and OSHA 18001. The Taloja plant holds QMS ISO 9001:2015, ISO 17025:2017, EMS ISO 14001:2015, OH&SMS ISO 45001:2018, and EnMS ISO 50001:2018. The Panoli plant has OHSAS 18001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001 certifications. The Jigani Unit I is US FDA approved for cGMP intermediates and APIs.
