Company Overview
Home for Life is an internationally recognized care-for-life sanctuary located in Star Prairie, Wisconsin. The sanctuary is designed to provide a life-saving and life-affirming alternative for dogs and cats who have not been able to find a home or keep their previous home. Home for Life calls this concept 'The Third Door' in animal welfare, offering at-risk animals an alternative to an undeserved death. The organization is a registered 501(c)(3) charity and provides care for nearly 200 animals.
Sanctuary Facilities
Home for Life's facilities include spacious catteries equipped with skylights, huge windows, heated floors, and attached outdoor runs. The organization maintains separate catteries for cats that have tested positive for feline leukemia and FIV. For dogs, the sanctuary offers townhouses and apartments with similar amenities, including heated floors and piped-in soothing music. Future plans include the construction of a Dog Training and Exercise Building, for which the organization needs to raise $300,000, and the aim to acquire an additional 160 acres of land to insulate the sanctuary from development.
Community Outreach Programs
Home for Life runs several community outreach programs: Peace Creatures, Senior Outreach, Sit-Stay-Heal, The Renaissance Project, and Education Outreach. The Peace Creatures program involves the sanctuary's animals in providing healing pet therapy. The Senior Outreach Program includes visits to nursing homes for therapy work with the elderly. The Sit-Stay-Heal program collaborates with hospitals to bring pet therapy to patients. The Renaissance Project pairs younger dogs with at-risk teens for training in basic obedience.
Sanctuary Tours
Home for Life offers escorted tours to sponsors and donors from the first weekend after Memorial Day through mid-October each year. These tours provide an opportunity for supporters to visit the sanctuary and see firsthand the care and facilities provided to the animals. The tours help bolster community support and foster a deeper understanding of the sanctuary’s mission.
