History of InterFaith Works
InterFaith Works was founded in 1976 with the mission to build understanding among people of different religions and across racial divides. Over the decades, it has remained committed to promoting equity and creating bridges of understanding in various communities. The organization has continually expanded its programs to address the needs of marginalized groups, including the frail elderly and individuals in prisons, hospitals, and nursing homes.
Programs and Services Offered by InterFaith Works
InterFaith Works offers a wide variety of programs aimed at addressing critical social needs. These include the Senior Companion Program, One to One Program, Aging Services for New Americans, Neighborhood Advisor, and Digital Inclusion for Older Adults. In addition, the organization administers the Clergy Parking Cards process, which allows clergy free parking at Syracuse hospitals, nursing homes, and correctional facilities while visiting congregants. The Onondaga County Emergency Rental Assistance Program is also managed by InterFaith Works to assist tenants affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with rental payment issues.
Center for New Americans
InterFaith Works' Center for New Americans resettles refugees from the Middle East, Asia, and Africa, as well as asylees from many other countries. The center provides an array of services, including English classes, employment preparation, immigration services, medical case management, and mental health services. Cultural orientation, referrals, and community navigation services are also offered to assist new arrivals in adapting to their new environment.
Center for Healthy Aging
InterFaith Works' Center for Healthy Aging aims to promote activity, socialization, and lifelong learning to help older adults live well and age with dignity. The center focuses on creating an inclusive environment where older individuals can engage in meaningful activities that enhance their quality of life. It provides several specialized programs tailored to the needs of the elderly, ensuring they receive the support and companionship necessary for a fulfilling life.
Community and Religious Initiatives
InterFaith Works runs several community and religious initiatives to foster dialogue and understanding. The El-Hindi Center for Dialogue & Action has been involved in organizing efforts around racism, race relations, and healing for over 25 years. The Community-Wide Dialogue to End Racism is the longest-running dialogue of its kind in the country. Additionally, InterFaith Works organizes the annual United We End Racism event, which features the Racial Justice Awards and a Duck Race Community Festival. The Faith Partner Program comprises 37 congregations and other faith community partners throughout Central New York.
