History
New Urban Arts was founded in 1997 by a group of four college students and ten high school students in Providence, Rhode Island. Over the years, the organization has grown to serve over 1,000 high school students and attract 2,000 visitors annually. In 2009, New Urban Arts received the prestigious Coming Up Taller Award from First Lady Michelle Obama, distinguishing it as one of the top out-of-school arts and humanities programs in the nation. By 2022, the organization celebrated its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century of committed service to youth arts education.
Location and Facilities
Located in Providence, Rhode Island, New Urban Arts recently enhanced its studio space significantly. Initially situated at 705 Westminster Street, the organization completed a million-dollar capital campaign to support renovations. These efforts, backed by the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, expanded the studio to 6,000 square feet, providing ample space for the diverse array of programs and activities the organization offers.
